iOS 17.1 coming soon: These are the new iPhone features

With the launch of the new iPhone models, Apple has also provided its phones with the latest version of iOS. With iOS 17, the iPhones have received some innovations that breathe a whole new life into the devices – we’re talking about the standby mode, among other things.

Now, the first significant update to iOS 17.1 is due. In addition to ironing out minor bugs, there are some new setting options. Design changes and completely new features are also included.

Here is an overview of the innovations in iOS 17.1, which are already available in the beta version. It is still unclear when iOS 17.1 will be released for everyone, but it should not be too long now.

AirDrop via mobile network
To send content to another Apple device via AirDrop, both devices had to be connected to the same Wi-Fi network. This has now changed under iOS 17.1, at least in part.

If you start a file transfer via AirDrop and the Wi-Fi connection is interrupted during the transfer, the transfer can be continued in the cellular network. A corresponding setting option has been added to the AirDrop menu.

However, some prerequisites exist: both devices must be logged into an iCloud account, and the AirDrop transfer must be started via wifi. So, an AirDrop transfer over the cellular network alone will not work.

The action button has been changed.
The action button is one of the most profound hardware changes Apple has introduced to its iPhones. For the first time, the ring-mute toggle switch has been replaced by a button on the Pro models of the iPhone 15 series.

The functionality of this action button is slightly changed with iOS 17.1. If the iPhone is in your pocket, you must press the button much longer to perform the specified action. This is to prevent unintentional actions.

The iPhone recognizes whether it is in a trouser pocket or a handbag via the proximity sensor. There is no corresponding setting option for this. It seems that the changes will be introduced for all 15 Pro models.

New feature for standby mode
The StandBy mode was one of the significant innovations in iOS 17. This mode now has a new option, which many users will probably welcome. In iOS 17.1, it is possible to define the screen behaviour in StandBy mode more precisely.

Under the new entry “Display” in the “StandBy” menu, you can now choose when and if the screen should turn off in standby mode. “Automatic,” “After 20 seconds,” or “Never” are available.

One-hand mode gets a new design.
If you swipe the screen’s bottom edge downwards, the upper screen area is moved downwards so that it is easier to reach with one hand. If you have activated this one-hand mode, you will notice a new design in iOS 17.1.

The background is now completely black – until now, it was colour-matched to the wallpaper. In addition, the dynamic island is no longer displayed twice. Until now, the display recess was simulated in the screen area that was shifted downwards and thus displayed twice.

Apple Music now has a Favorite button.
With iOS 17.1, Apple Music gets a welcome innovation that simplifies the app’s handling. A “star” icon now appears in the song view, which can be used to add the respective track to the favourites.
